I see your point where that could be very handy indeed.

The good thing about it is that if you don't happen to have a friend in City Hall, as I do, then it just takes a few minutes to visit your City Hall and become acquainted with one who can help you find places to detect.

Hey everyone,
As far as permission it is best to get permission in writing.  As far as sidewalks, check with city & county engineers to see if any projects include side walk replacement. The new laws requiring ADA compliant sidewalks ( sidewalks with ramps for the handicapped) and usually long sections of sidewalk are replaced more and more. This makes a fantastic opportunity for more finds. I found a 1907 Indian head penny and a 1925 silver quarter at one spot. In a spot where the asphalt pavement had been removed an old brick street  was exposed- this also lead to a great hunting spot. A friend a concrete company might be able to give leads on this too.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone offered to clean a particularly interesting piece of property in exchange for permission to hunt it?  I'm particularly thinking about the case of absentee owners where you propose clearing weeds, etc in return for permission to hunt on a regular basis.  If you have, how has it worked out for you?  Do you find the owners quicker to agree or more suspicious, or does it just not seem to matter?

That's pretty much standard for anyone who detects an abandoned property. It's easier to cut the weeds back and hunt than it is to wade through them. It's that old win-win circumstance we all talk about. I don't make it a selling point though because sometimes they want you to do much more than just trim things up. Hauling off old water heaters, derelict equipment and such is sometimes way too much for a handful of coins - even old ones.

For me, it's a case by case decision.

Hello Everyone, Something else to check on at City Hall is with the City Engineer. He normally has a list of property that is going to be demolished. That is another time to get permission.

Hi I was reading this piece and I think it pretty much for warns about getting writen permmission from the owner. As for state and federal land you need a permmit is says.
it can be 90 days in jail for digging and a fine or lots of leagal fees. I  have a cop freind too that says  it is ok to do the city stuf , But his wife is Mayor and she say you better have the permit or an Archaeologist or  a DEC (Department Of Environmental. Just might happen by and make Life misserable.

It is the one thing that bothers me so I hunt in my yard or have a signed piece of paperfrom the owner in my pocket saying it is ok.

I am not a attorney or anything like it, but always like to cover the bases

This is a permmision slip I made up for myself. I carry two or three with me in case I run into the one who can give me permission. In many states you need something  like this to hunt or just be there.

Hi Fitbridges.  Your suggestion of a permission slip is excellent and is a practice that I often use also.  When dealing with property owners who are friends of mine, I usually just get them to write their name and phone number on a small card which I can put in my billfold.  I recently got permission from a landlord to detect several house yards that she owns here in my hometown.  While hunting one of them, a woman who lived in the house next door to the one I was searching called the cops and reported me so I was kind of surprised when a cop walked up behind me while I was unearthing a penny.  He told me that the lady next door was suspicious and so I showed him my ID and handed him the card with the landowners name and phone number on it and informed him that I had her permission to hunt all her renthouses in town and that he could call her if he needed further confirmation.  My ID and her name and number was sufficient to satisfy him, however, and after he called the information in, he left and I resumed my detecting.
