Oh my Goodness GD you live in Australia? Shocked I thought you were from the US. I let you know when I visit your area to go hunt together if you don't mind.
Im from Chicago. Here I have hunted parks, beaches, and forest preserves. Nobody has bothered me so far. The police has observed me in several places while hunting and never said anything or approached me.  Police. Only one police officer approached me in a park to let me know that he had been in the hobby for many years, then left. There are no policies against digging in public parks in Chicago, but Illinois require permits in certain state parks.

I do live in Perth, Western Australia. I moved here 11 years ago but my wife and I are bi-continental. We have residences in the US and here. Until recently, we traveled a lot back and forth. Now, with all the aches and pains that come with traveling, it has to be for a good reason.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Where is your residence here? Also, you know a lot about coins. Are you a coin collector or expert?

Go Up Go Down

Sounds like you handled that really well.  I'm pretty new at this and I have had police slow down and look at me but never stopped.  One time I was detecting at a park and was approached by a neighbor.  I thought..."oh boy...here we go.. he's going to give me a hard time about detecting the park".  To my surprise, he was very pleasant and invited me to detect his yard.  He was really fascinated.  I even found a French dime from the 1800s and offered it to him, but he would not take it.  He said I found it and I should keep it.

The park was in a small town near where I live and I could not find anyone to ask permission, so I looked for a park rules sign.  I found one and metal detecting was not mentioned, so I figured I was OK.  Nobody has ever bothered me yet.  If there are no laws prohibiting it, I bring Lincoln the Treasure Dog along with me and tie him to a tree near where I am detecting.   He's about as friendly as they come, but maybe that keeps some people away.  I'm always am amazed at how much trash I take out with me.  There is a lot of can slaw out there that people could cut themselves by stepping on.

Nice to hear that your park superintendent was so nice about it!
