In a park, I will bring a small hand towel with me. I saw several m/d videos on youtube, and in some of them a couple of the guys were using the towel. After digging the initial plug, if they have to continue to dig a bit deeper, then you have to put the dirt somewhere. This way - you put it all on the towel, then dump it back into the plug after you're done and get your find that way, they can't tell where the plug was even made because it's so clean there. Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to remember that.

I ran into one of these selfish people the other day. I was detecting in a sand volleyball court and I noticed some people walking down a path one had a detector. Along the path there is excersize equipment where they were detecting. Just out of curiosity I looked and sure enough there were holes everywhere and pieces of metal lying where they dug Angry! Its a shame there are people out there that act like this. Foiled

Filling plugs in dirt is mandatory, and goes without saying, but is filling holes in sand equally important?  I mean even off the beach, one downpour will fill in the hole, and on the beach, one high tide will fill it in.

I prospect in a creek on an old gold mining site from the 1840's.  The owner of the site says "The creek will heal itself".  I believe him.

In some cases, these people have not been exposed to the proper etiquette.   They may just have been given a detector or saw one cheap and thought "hey, neat, I should get one of those".   Depending on the circumstances you might want to take an opportunity  to "educate" the offender --- chat him/her up to find out if they've been doing this for long, offer them a tip or two, and then let them know that their behavior gets ALL of us thrown out of ALL parks, so if they enjoy metal detecting--do it right (and join THunting.com)

I was hunting a local park about a month ago. There were lots of parents out with their kids playing. At one point I had about 6 little kids following me all over the park. The parents didn't seem to be concerned of the Creepy Guy in the park.  Grin It was kinda funny. I'm thankful for lots of parks here in Houston.

That's where my bulky headphones come in handy. You can't help what people think of you when they first see you but you can make a difference to the kids if you dig and remove trash items.

Australian grasses are different from US grasses due to lack of rain down here. They're tighter, shorter and hold water in the root system for a little longer than most US style grasses. Because of this, I find a lot of modern coins on the surface and most pre-decimal coins deep in the ground. Overall, I prefer the sand pit Tot Lots and beaches.

Oh my Goodness GD you live in Australia? Shocked I thought you were from the US. I let you know when I visit your area to go hunt together if you don't mind.
Im from Chicago. Here I have hunted parks, beaches, and forest preserves. Nobody has bothered me so far. The police has observed me in several places while hunting and never said anything or approached me.  Police. Only one police officer approached me in a park to let me know that he had been in the hobby for many years, then left. There are no policies against digging in public parks in Chicago, but Illinois require permits in certain state parks.

GD likes to confuse us......you're right about him being FROM the US ...... and he does live in Australia (at least most of the time)----gives him the best (or maybe the worst) of both worlds.

Your amazing GD. I've experienced gaping holes others leave on the beach. I never thought of filling them in. At times there would be so many holes, if I filled them in, I would have no time to detect. At the beach or park I couldn't think about not filling in my holes. It's just common courtesy.
