Tennessee MD laws

I just contacted a potential new MD partner.
Although I have detected in my neighborhood many times without any problems, he indicated that I might have broken the law and is concerned about fines and confiscation of our equipment.
We intend to either hunt public ball parks and local parks or private property with written permission.
Am I in jeopardy of running afoul of the law?

Yes and No. Private property with written permission is OK. Parks etc are a little different you need to check with the local city hall in each town you hunt in

Actually there most likely was. Ignorance can be bliss as long as it doesn't step up and bite you. Fortunately MOST towns have few if any anti-metal detecting laws in place (CITIES are trending in the other direction, though, since they tend to have people who think "preserving the past" is a) a good way to get and keep influence over others and c) means not letting anyone but 'trained' professionals or someone under their supervision recover "the precious relics of our shared history and heritage"). The point Seldom is making is no matter where you live, you need to check the local rules and regulations. And if you live in an area where there are local, county, and state parks you need to know the regulations that apply to each (and then make sure you don't confuse your city park with you county park if the regs are different).

Here in Deming the Schools and the Parks are Three Different Animals.
Both are Treated like Privet and Public Properties.
All of the Old Schools are Fair Game with Open Gates after hours. Kids and You can go on the grounds and do your thing as long and you don't tear the place up.
The New Schools we have look like Gulags with Razor wire fences 8ft high and locked gates.
All parks are cool to hunt NO RULES NOT TO just don't be leaving holes in the Precious little grass they can get to grow.
The park at the Court house is a different animal. It's all Precious Grass and they get most upset if you do any digging but this is the place that holds all the Events like car shows and Duck races. Yea DUCK RACES!
Lots of coins just down in the Grass if you hunt it. Little Trash like Pull Tops and stuff.
Morrel is Do your thing if not Posted but Do it Right!
Blend in the the Rest of the people and don't make a show of your self. No One will get upset.

Great advice and thank you, for it.
I hunted Boston Common and all the town parks around it over 20 years ago and I'm sure the rules have been altered since then.
It's a shame we have to be so careful about things we used to do without a thought.
I like what Europe does. Dig it up. If they can use it in a museum they'll pay you for the find.
If there is no call for it it's yours.
Think of all the Civil War items just rotting in the ground.
That's so much better than having people recover the stuff and sharing it with the rest of the world.

Back in the days of Real Treasure hunting in the south west I knew a guy named Earl.
He found three 60 some lb gold bars after years and years of research and hunting.
He found them by mistake sorta.
He left his detector turned on walking back to the truck just doing the lazy swing thing walking along.
It did the Beep thing real loud by a Greese Wood.
He said he looked up under the Greese Wood and saw the end of the Ingot poking up out of the sand.
He found Three down in the sand that day.
The Gov Took one away and gave him the other two.
Being Marked US GOV 999 hard to argue on that one.
Now Days they would take the Whole thing I bet.
They were from a Train Robbery back in the 1800's!
Earl Died back in the 80's gold not being so hot back then and the dollar being a lot better then it is today he was able to buy his son a new house and 4 W his wife the same and have some stash in the Bank.
Back then Banks worked for you not them.

I called the police to find out their opinion about MD.
No reply.
I called the Town Hall to find out about any ordinances..
No reply.
I W E N T to the police station, this morning.
They didn't know about any laws but they would look into it and get back to me.

Guess what. As I was writing this message my phone rang and it was the town of Maryville.
"There is NO md allowed on ANY public property in Maryville TN."
I wish I kept my big mouth shut.
It's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Unfortunately, that is the way it sometimes go. It is easier to play it safe and say "No" than it is to actually check the city ordinances.
You probably would have been better off asking for a copy of the city ordinances (if asked why, you could honestly say you wanted to make sure you were accidentally violating any) and then if there was a ordinance that looked like it could be interpreted as banning metal detectors asked the department responsible for applying that portion of the ordinance.
