Hello All
The trouble we have is small minority of people wrecking it for the others. I cannot count the number of private properties that have been closed off to detectorists. Because of the previous actions of a few.
Leaving gates open or sometimes shutting them can have disastrous results for stock looking for water. Leaving rubbish shooting cattle have more than discouraged farmers to be agreeable to letting people onto their property. Another thing is legal litigation. Once upon a time if you fell over, it was Hardluck, these days there is a lawsuit. So landowners are very weary of letting strangers over their property.
The price of metal detectors have fallen so much available that its available to almost anyone. Even your local neighborhood idiot can get one. How many parks have had holes left unfilled only to have some one tripping over them and sue the council or park administration?
Its not just the small end of town who detects beach parks etc.. even the big end of town treasure hunters have down stupid things as well. How many shipwrecks or historic archeological ruins have been blown up ransacked and destroyed with no thought at all?
Its because of the ignorance of a few the majority will suffer.
And suffer we will unless we the majority draft and adopt an international code of practice that has the input all those concerned.
I am sure there are many experienced treasure hunters researchers on this website alone that could give many commonsense rules involving dealing with land owners, permission and knowledge of their local bylaws etc that would be invaluable.
Even a Topic of that at this website alone would be invaluable to newbies to the hobby.
Hardluck.
