Go Up Go Down

Hey, I am new to this forum. I travel with my Garrett Stinger and I don't trust putting it in the luggage. I have heard too many stories of missing / broken items. Have you ever watched them load or unload an aircraft? It's not a pretty sight, especially if you have sensitive electronics in there! I always take my electronic portion in my carry-on and the less expensive parts in the luggage. I had to "shorten" my handle to fit into a suitcase by sawing it right behind the power head and made a spacer that slips tightly inside the pipe " I used a 9/16 socket I think. When I put the power head back on I slip the other half of the pipe handle onto the spacer and the four snap buttons that snap into the power head hold the shaft together. Works like a charm.  Detecting

altheboatman - great idea about shortening the handle.  Have you gotten any questioning from the screeners at the airport wanting to know what the electronic components are? Huh?

Gee no, I was rather expecting some problems though as I had my laptop, metal detector, Camera, GPS and associated charging gear in the same bag? I was only heading to Santa Fe (in country) from Maine. perhaps on an international flight it would have been different??

Last time I flew, I was forced to surrender a can of hairspray (I'm still miffed about that!) so I can only imagine what those guys will do when they come across a piece of unfamiliar electronics. Police

Went to Alaska on Northwest Airlines. Packed my DFX and had it put on as checked baggage. No problem either coming or going. Detecting

I have mixed feelings I have brought home full beers for my beer bottle collection, and I wondered how they made it after I sat looking out the plane window at the rough treatment buy the baggage handlers,, and the same time we were not allowed to bring nursery water on a flight for a grandchild, then a security officer scanned it and said it was alright, I myself would proably like it in my check in baggage..I think a lot has to do with the security officers attitude when you check in though.

Go Up Go Down

I've made two domestic US round trips in the last 9 months on two different carriers with my metal detector.  In both cases I had the detector in my check in baggage and extremely well packed/padded, but where it would still be quickly identifiable if TSA needed to do a visual.   I had no problems either time.  One change I did make, though---I upgraded my luggage to one of the rolling duffels with a separate lower zipper compartment (along the handle) that is more rigid than the rest of the bag.   This is where I pack the detector with sufficient clothing or other soft items to provide cushioning from all directions.

This summer I took my just newly received Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 to Ohau, Hawaii with no problem back and forth. Not even a question asked. Yes, I checked it in and the staff at the airport put it inside a plastic container. No damage suffered whatsoever, but I wrapped it in paper just in case. Happy trip and hunting  Waveing.
