when it comes to metal detecting? This board is represented with individuals from a few countries- mostly N America and N Europe. What about other countries like Russia- Poland Greece- Italy and all the others? Anyone have any knowledge of this subject?

Hell Steve,

I think that Turkey has just about the strictes metal detecting laws by now. I wouldn't dare to bring a metal detctor there or you could easily end up in prison (ever seen Midnight Express? ... just kidding  Cheesy)

Greece is also quite strict and in Italy you definately should stay away from any archeological sites.

Eastern Europe is still however like the Wild West. Lots of possibilities tehre but thinsg are getting fewer as many people there hunt for a living.

I would like to learn about metal detecting laws in Japan. Anyone been detecting there???

Regards,

Christian

Christian:

I know there's a couple meteorite hunters in Russia that use MD's but that's about all I know with regards to E Europe. I wonder what  MD'ers have been finding elsewhere?

Hopefully we get some posts on this subject.  You can never be too well informed on MD laws and it's always nice to hear what others are finding around the world.

Steve,

Russia is loaded with WWII relics in some parts. Some farmes there even uses old grenades and rocket instead of a fence.

Many other eastern European countries still have plenyt of Romain artifacts to be found.

Christian

Actually there were two substantial falls in Russia. One in 1947 called the Sikhote Alin in which a lot of material was recovered.

The other was the explosion at Tunguska in 1907-08. This one produced nothing but tiny spheroids since it completely disintegrated.

Both of these would have done some major damage had they landed over a populated city . There was a fall in the USA recently called the Park Forest which landed in Chicago but was so small -it didn't do any damage. Next time we may not be so lucky.

Christian- He can't seem to find anyone who metal detects over in Japan. They do have metal detecting clubs over there so it must be legal. I suggest you contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your city- perhaps they can help you or know someone who can.
