Hey, I have read about the Kincaid and Powell Expedition thru the Grand canyon, sponsored by the Smithsonian.

The Smithsonian later claimed to know nothing about this. Kincaid , along with a newspaper article from 1909 state that they discovered all kinds of interesting things.
Has anybody have any other info on this?

Thanks Mr-elmo

I'm sure there will be lots of responses to this particular tale.  Don't think I've heard of it before, but will take a look as soon as I can cut out some time.

I've seen stuff about this on some reputable, and some not so reputable sites.
Hopefully there will be some sort of expert out there.
I did hear that this particular national park area is closed to hikers , because it is "dangerous" (dangerous to who)

Given the number of serious falls in the "safe" areas of Grand Canyon National Park annually that might not be a cover up

Have you tried to use Google Earth to scan the canyon? A big task, yes, but you should be able to narrow the search from the article.

yes, I have found 2 probable locations Marble Canyon, and where the "Little Colorado " go into the Navajo Country. I lean toward the latter

This is a great story. The big clue to the location was a red oxide layer if I recall. Hard to see from the top.

There was an earlier expedition than the Kincaid party that noted ruins of native peoples in a daily journal. They documented thier locations and miles travelled. I can't recall the name off the top of my head but it's easily researched and decently documented.

The egyptian names of the places are interesting but have a possible simple answer. I'd have to dig up the data since I haven't looked at this for several years.

The local natives were supposed to have stories of older people according to a more recent expedition, but I don't have any evidence besides that report so this could be fabricated.

The height of the cave location would have kept almost everyone away so I keep this one in the back of my mind just in case.

Wasn't able to place Kincaid as being from Idaho or ever existing. In fact I could not find any of the people involved in any other records when I searched before, but it might be fun to spin it again. Perhaps some new data has surfaced.

It's a great story BA, all Indiana Jones-ish and in your neck of the woods kinda...    Wink you just know you always wanted to go rock climbing in the forbidden zone....  Grin

20 or 30 years ago, that would have been a very real possibility.   Unfortunately, the older I get, the more attached I get to my neck and the more I'm conscious of making sure all body parts continue to function for as long as possible.  Sad

I hear ya BA, I keep getting reminded I'm not indestructable like I once thought....

This is one I would have liked to go exploring on once but like you I think I'll wait for pictures  Cry

I did find a (shady) clue that SA Jordan may have been SA Jordon, a field agent for the Smithsonian specializing in european cultures. Apparently wrote a paper or two according to one source who didn't cite thier source.

Also found some research done on the Arizona Gazette reporting this article was pretty much alone in it's fantastical nature. Articles months before and after show no resemblance to the nature of this article. This doesn't give much credence to the theory this was just made up sensationalism, but it doesn't really mean it isn't either. Some digging into the reporters other stories might give up a clue as to his style of reporting and integrity.

From what I recall there was a followup talking about the removal of objects and encasing the place in concrete or dynamiting the cave. That's just from memory so I can't be sure if it was a real article or what.

Lock down one real person from this story and it gets way more interesting.... until then it's just a story. Very neat story, but a story.

I think I'll schedule some time in the main Phoenix library next weekend (busy hunting out of town this weekend) --see if I can scare up some info in the special collections room or in the microfilms.
