Hello All

The following alleged treasure legend comes from an old prospector’s diary related by Robert Welles Ritchie Around the hills of Camptonville California during the early gold rush years a gold miner  called Bill Synder hit a good patch of gold and was doing quite well and built a shack near his claim.
Bill came down with dysentery and in his sickness knowing he needed to hide his much hard won gold in a story of almost from the pages of a penny dreadful book. Found a grove of sugar pines and in the moonlight where the shadows crossed and buried his gold.

Bill made his way down to Nevada City where he spent 6 months in hospital. Returning to his claim he discovered to his horror his cabin gone and the grove of trees he buried his gold worth 80000 dollars in 1929 values gone.
As you could imagine the prospector tried in vain to recover his gold. The trauma of his predicament eventually drove him mad and he eventually ended up in an insane asylum.

Was there any truth to this legend? Or was it just another lost cabin, lost mine story that floated around the mining camps of the west?
Like with all treasure legends a more detailed research is required to establish the existence of such a man. Perhaps a search through an old mine claim registry; Asylum records or Census records of the time might be a help?  A greater understand of the time of these alleged events may also help.

Perhaps with little diligent research one can either confirm the story or disregard the story as just a legend. And if the former it is then perhaps there is still buried in the hill around the sleepy village of Camptonville a hoard of gold worth perhaps about nearly 3.8 million?

Hardluck
