Have heard several stories about a cache of muskets being buried near the Old Mullan Road that ran through North Idaho near Coeur d'Alene.  Apparently, the site is near Fourth of July Canyon where Mullan and his men camped.  Don't know if this was during the Nez Perce or earlier Indian Wars.

I have heard many stories of weapons caches buried all over the US including here in Missouri. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is the condition that might be in if they were found. Anyone know of something like this having been recovered in the past and what condition they were in?

Someone found a couple boxes of civil war rifles in a cave on the Gasconade River near Hermann in the 1940's. The person was hiking in the area and saw a cave entered it and saw the boxes. They supposedly were packed in grease. He took one rifle back to town but could never find the cave and locate the rifles again. I have been on this river many times with a canoe and stopped everytime I saw  a cave. These rifles- no doubt were found many years ago by someone who kept their mouth shut about it. Every landowner who had property in the area was searching his land for this once the word got out.

I have heard that during the last battles of the CW, the Frederal troops used captuered Confederate weapons to codaroy (?) roads so the wagons and guns could get through the mud.
I also remember someone found a small section of one of these roads in the early 80s...something like 80 muskets in 12 feet of the old road/path.

Have also heard of a cache that was found near the Pea Ridge National Battlefield in Arkansas.  A friend of mine had a friend who he said could take me to it, but never had the chance to go see if it was really true.   Cry

What an experience that would have been had you had the chance to see it.

Go Up Go Down

I have a neighbor who had a simular find here in South Carolina in 2000. He was helping clear a plot of land in an area called Coronaca just west of present Lake Greenwood. There was a Federal style house that was on the property that had been torn down to make way for a Grocery Store to be built on the site. When the earth movers came in and began to grade the area a large Cashe of Civil War pistols were found. Many of the crew split up their find amongst each other. My nieghbor has his hanging in his office I have sen and held it. I is a 44cal Colt cap and ball revolver not CSA because there was no brass brite work. It is in fair to poor condition with chips in cylinder and cracks in metal work.
