{alt}{alt}
While there we wanted to visit the site of original Fort Wingate, it was in the lava beds, a 3 hr trek thru lava, alkali flats, and whatall, there were several places under giant cedar tree roots where they had stacked lava  to make a place to stay, all were covered with about 4 ft of blow dust, no sand in this area , just rocks, and volcanic stuff  all we had to dig with were trowels, did manage some bullets and odds and ends, when they left in the 1800's the  broke all their china, dishes and stuff in the lava beds, what a mess, as we were returning across the alkali flats we found that we had been tracked for a while by a bear, ===we speeded up, later before we got to our ol' VW bug to get a going, we heard a squeaking sound, hmmmm, large rattler in our path swallowing mice, had one caught in his mouth and couldn't bite me, ro i teased him wit my detector,   wooooo  was he mad, got back to car later, wore out and dirty, next trip, ghost towns,

Yes detected very hard under the tree, the soil? dust was packed hard and actually around 2 ft deep or so to anything we could dig with our trowels, found some large steel objects, did not have any idea what they were, and no way to get them dislodged, our detectors were not the best for what we got into, had to take lightweight stuff because of the length and the terrain, had tesoros and  they just couldn't get the depth we really needed and we did not have enoughh digging equipment, we just did not realize what we were getting into, for this stuff you need someway to get in there with big diggers, and some kind of super detector, cause most is covered up very deep with dust type volcanic ycch, tesoro would do it but sure had a lot of guess this looks like a good spot type diggin hole, cause lots of times we just started to diggin and after a while used the detector, i did use different brands but just too deep for anything i could come up with, the fisher cz5 seemed a little bit better, but it just didn't make a whole lot of difference, all was verrrrrry deep=======BUT REWARDING, heck i got a shoebox ful of pics, and a lifetime of memories  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
