Hello All
In the proximity of Burlington North Carolina there is or was a field that may hide treasures from the American Civil war? A location with multiple caches of treasure how good does it get for the everyday detectorist? If only we knew the exact location?
During General Sherman famous march to the sea. He acquired 55000 dollars and 700 dollars worth of Jewelery from the bank of Newburn. He buried the treasure in a underground vault near Burlington. Some of his soldiers discovered the excavation and stole the treasure.
The treasure was buried by the soldiers in multiple locations around a field near Burlington. Many of these men were later killed in battle and others never returned.
Around 1900 an farm worker discovered about 1200 coins in a farmers field that sparked off a mini gold rush. Things got so bad the farmer had to replant his corn 3 times because of people digging up his field.
A question springs to mind what would a metal detector find at the site?
Much has changed since then. Is the field still a farm or is it buried under housing estates or industrial estates? Anyone interested in the local history may be able to track down location and who knows could even end up with their very own field of dreams?
Hardluck
