Read this story in an old Treasure book I own.
A Manager of the Mt Mulgrave Staion in north Queensland was out mustering cattle on the Palmer River when a fellow stockman (an aboriginal fellow) pointed out a large sunken in area of ground his father had shown him. He told the story of a party of Chinese miners that were onto a good deposit of alluvial gold which ran 4-5m underground into the riverbank. The miners had dug a long tunnel without the support of timber No no!. One day the mine collapsed burying about 20 miners along with their rich deposit! Apparently no attempt was made by their fellow miners to dig out their body's or re-open the tunnel in fear of the spirits of the dead miners.

Hello Eagleye

I think the book was called "Lost Mines and Treasures of Northern Australia" A little gem of a rare book these days. I actually went searching for some of the lost reefs mentioned in the book when I worked up there many years ago. My favorite was little big yellow snake gold reef story and the one a bout the Bora stone.

I had the chance to buy 2km of Palmer river mining lease of alluvial gravels at one time for $300.000. Now with the price of gold I am kicking myself for not taking up the lease. But those are the breaks.

Hi HardLuck,
Yeah that's the one!  Definitely a good little read. It would have been a good experience working in the area. I haven't been there myself but am keen to go for a look real soon.

Hello eagleye

If you have good four wheel drive check out a place called Top camp. I found some nice nuggets there. The kakadoons have a story about a giant nugget called a Bora stone that was used in sacred men ceremonies in the old bora ring they had near top camp.

It is allegedly hidden away in a place where the sun shines through a rock out crop. This nugget is so big it takes two men to lift it.
