Read this story in an old Treasure book I own.
A Manager of the Mt Mulgrave Staion in north Queensland was out mustering cattle on the Palmer River when a fellow stockman (an aboriginal fellow) pointed out a large sunken in area of ground his father had shown him. He told the story of a party of Chinese miners that were onto a good deposit of alluvial gold which ran 4-5m underground into the riverbank. The miners had dug a long tunnel without the support of timber
. One day the mine collapsed burying about 20 miners along with their rich deposit! Apparently no attempt was made by their fellow miners to dig out their body's or re-open the tunnel in fear of the spirits of the dead miners.
