n3 I have very little original research on this one but did talk with a hunter from Austin that spend years looking into it. His thoughts were that 6 to 8 thousand were spent on sheep and labor before the balance was hide and that at least part was recovered after the murder because some of the gold pieces showed up in local saloons. He also had a report from several residents that 2 treasure hunters recovered 7000 dollars in gold coins in 1972 in Palo Duro. I only talked with this hunter a few times over the years but others guys that I know very well say he was a straight shooter so I have no reason not to believe him.
