If there is any credence to the tale, the cowpokes (locals) who helped the younger Martinez in his search revealed that they were centered around the "point of rocks" area. so my thinking is wrong. There would have been more Information that those three were working with than was written down. There was a cimarron cut-off route that forded the river at the Point of Rocks area and took off south-west from there as well as the route that went into Colorado along the Arkansas river. That is the area that has been searched on a number of occasions.
