previous to the revolutionary war,there were plenty of skirmishes between brits & france,indians,americans,spanish,ect... here in western pa.

anyways,the fact is,when general dunbar learned of a huge (at that time) army of 2500 brits were on his trail in search of him,they burned everything in the camp.everything except for what they were wearing and could carry off in a hurry.

this way they figured at least,if worse came to worse,the brits would gain nothing

now for the legend...

allthough i have never witnessed any documentation on the following matter,i have been told this by three diff. lawyers,and one timber barron.

dunbar ordered all gold to be put in a cannon and buried.he also ordered all silver to be put in a cannon and buried.

don't know if it has ever been recovered or anything else about it,but it sure makes for some difficult sleeping sometimes!

cool story dr.dtector...Smiley...thats not too far from me a few hours west.  It would be awesome to find a canon let alone a canon full of gold

dunbars camp was alongside braddocks road,which eventually became america's first highway.[u.s.40].
braddock was discovered buried in the middle of that road in 1801 when improvements were made.was buried there so indians would not find his corpse and mutilate it. anyways...
this old road paralells u.s. 40 here and there but for most part it meanders through the woods.just a few traces remain.the trail goes from maryland to braddock pa.[just south of pittsburgh]
the cannons would have to be south,southwest,or southeast of camp site,as brits were coming from the north.
but then who knows...

If the story is true- it could have sunk beyond the range of an ordinary MD. Coins can sink inchs over time- no telling what a cannon could do.
