Go Up Go Down

Hi, all. New on this forum. The following story about the 1941 cavern find on Ft. Huachuca got my interest on this subject:  Shocked

Fort Huachuca Gold

. . . It was 1941. Private Robert Jones and his buddy had some free time on post. They spent the day heading up a mule trail into Huachuca Canyon. It was a serene and beautiful stroll until...

"He fell into a hole," recalls Capt. Kyle Duncan. "He slid down what 35 feet into a cavern into a room. When he dusted himself off and looked around, he looked around with the little light he had and he saw large bars of gold and silver"

Jones had found seven thousand bars of gold and silver. Some estimate the find was worth 90 million dollars. Jones marked the spot. He came back a few days later and hacked off a piece of gold with a hatchet. An assayer in Douglas paid $800 for the chunk of gold. Jones was going to be rich. His map tells the tale. . . . .

The problem is, when I clicked the link for the map, it was no longer available. Does anyone have a copy of the map that was linked with the original story on this forum??? Thanks in advance.  Great

Go Up Go Down

I did some research on this subject and dug up all kinds of articles and references.

Apparantly, the military bulldozed and scooped and dynamited the area for days in an attempt to find the cavern based on Jones testimony and markings they found on the boulder and the burnt tree as Jones had described, but to no avail. Also, using sophisticated instruments, a scientific research team later in 1975 tried to locate the cavern. The cavern was found, but no gold or silver - only silt and mud. They also were not able to measure any instances of metallic objects except water pipes, let alone gold or silver using new sophisticated electrical resistance measuring devices that is still in use to this day because of its effectiveness.

A squirrel hunter who had been hunting in the area 40 years also witnessed the military using bulldozers to once again try and find the gold. Sounds to me like it has already been found, if it existed at all.  All in all, there were more than 7 known large-scale attempts at finding this alledged treasure-hoard. And there may have been some attempts by the military under cloak to recover this alledged "lost treasure."

The original gold "sample" that Jones was purported to have brought out of the cavern and sold for $800 and some odd dollars, was not a piece of gold bar at all, but rather gold encrusted "rock." It may very well be that Jones concocted the story in the hopes of finding a vein of gold based on his discovery of finding the gold encrusted rock in the underground cavern.

The military bulldozed, dynamited and scooped a large area down to 32 feet in the first attempt.
