Go Up Go Down

I own an undivided interest in two islands on the Louisiana coast. I have access to  every square inch of both islands. These islands  were the headquaters of Jean Lafitte for a number of years and he had 1000 pirates and 50 ships stationed on these islands. I am looking to put together a team of expert treasure hunters to do an expedition to search for possible buried treasure this summer. These  are two uninhabited barrier islands accessible only by boat and they are about each 3 miles long and 1 mile wide

Hello Rosco1954

The area you mention is very large for a systmatic search. I suggest a methodical search by dividing the islands into much smaller portions. Which would be more manageable. Each summer open a different portion for a sytematic search.

Have any potential treasure hunters sign an agreement on a share basis and idemify yourself against any liability. have a agreement on Method of detection, recovery and remedial work. The type of methods will depend on terrain. It would be very practical to pinpoint any areas of interest via any historical research documentation or any habitation remains on the island.

I suggest a group of 6 in 2 sets of 3 with one team leader with a gps do visual inspection of the site walkikng through each potion looking for any interesting signs of past habitation, remains of foundations or unusual depressions in the ground etc. Then after logging each location prgressively detect each location. As each expedition methodically searches each portion you can if you a good make a good profile of past activity on the island.

This way you will have a better informed way to search.

Hardluck

The problem Hardluck is they are barrier islands which have been beat to he$$ for the last 110 years by storms causing massive erosion and other damage. Plus over the last 30 or so years dozens of treasure groups and 100's of lone hunters myself included have worked that whole area to death finding little or no proof that Lafitte ever had any encampment there.

Hello All

I think it would be very hard to connect any treasure to Jean Laffite without some pretty conclusive varifable documentary evidence. However I would not be supprised at all that there are still some forgtten and lost smugglers treasure cahes left buried all along the gulf falsely attributed to Lafitte simpley because he was the most famous pirate on the coast.
