I'm afraid as far as NC goes I wouldn't be much help right now.  All i could offer would be your run of the mill parks, schoolyards and the such like that since I'm not very familiar with that area but hang in there and I'm sure someone can advise of some very good ideas to get you started.

welcome aboard hunter...:)...yes you could look up county topo maps or even old vintage maps by county to see old ghost town locations, also state park and state forrest maps are a big help up here...

In order to be a good treaure hunter - one must do a lot of research. My suggestion is to start at the local historical society. You'd be surprised what you can find.
