Hello Salvor6

yes you are correct that it would be a big story if it ever leaked out that it had been discovered.

The location in the Tuamotu archipeligo is very remote and very dangerous due to a lack of safe anchorages. Sailing there is subject to weather conditions. There are a mulitude of islands that look the same and even modern charts can be inaccurate. They used to call the Tuamotus "The Dangerous Islands"

Another problem is the islands were given multible names by different explorers as well as having thier own native names. Polynesian dialect has or had a lack of distinction between P and T, which futher confused the name of the real atoll where treasure was buried.

On a Tahiti website There is a later mention of a later expedition in 1994 that a relative of Hamiltion located silver medaleons from an atoll. Before being nearly shipwrecked by a storm. That said I would not trust the exact details of the story.
