Hello members,
After a lot of research and help from Sam Peppiatt in California we set off in search of Lasseters Reef. Only kilometres short of our planned destination we were stopped by heavy rain making further progress impossible. This was the heaviest rain in Central Australia since 1923, 8 years before Lasseter actually perished.
The following link is a PhotoStory I made of the trip, hope you enjoy.

Hello Christian,
We were planning to revisit the area last year however the blow out on diesel prices put a hold on it.
Now the world crisis..................

Cheers
Peter

Hello Every body

There has been many claims and counter claims about the Lasseter legend. I read about one such a claim in 1992. This researcher explorer claimed that Lasseter was not the original finder of the lost gold reef.

It was a old stock man who found the reef many years ago. This old stock man had told Lassiter about the reef, trying to interest him in organizing an expedition. Lasseter became obsessed with the story and tried to claim himself as the discoverer of the reef. Hence the story of the fictitious surveyor that Lasseter said was with him on his discovery.

The character of Lasseter was of a man who needed to prove himself,as this for him it was his moment of glory and fame. If he had to lie to get what he wanted he would of, and did. In some respects he achieved fame, because even in failure and death he became the legend we hear today.

What Lasseter failed to realize was the stock man who wanted to interest Lasseter in helping him recover the treasure, used an old prospectors trick while trying to get backers.

The stock man told Lasseter the directions to the treasure in reverse. This was to protect the old stock man from being excluded from the deal.

This researcher used copies of Lasseters diaries of the drawings of all the landmarks and went East from Alice Springs instead of West, into very rugged gold bearing country. after numerous fwd misadventures the researcher and his team discovered land marks that Lasseter was looking for recorded in his diary.

The researchers showed photographs of their find showing a long quartz reef of gold penetrating the rocky ground like a broken down wall that seemed to go for ever. They had made a deal with Western Mining Company I recall from memory at the time for an undisclosed sum.

A reporter asked them if the Lasseter purists would ever agree with them that they had found Lasseter's reef? The answer they gave with a shake and a smile, and said it does not matter because the Lasseter legend is so strong people will always search for it and for them thanks to Lasseters dairies they are now millionaires.

Hardluck,
I will not dispute your theory about the "Mirror Image" however if you go here many many years of research has been carried out and it is up to the reader to form their own opinion.

Hello Nightjar

First of all this is not my opinion or theory on the story. I am just referring to what I saw and read about many years ago. Are their claims true I do not know, but it appears that even the alleged 1992 claims were based upon claims and counter claims. Their discovery is perhaps all a coincidence?

The Lasseter story in all its versions by writers who were part of or associated with the 1930's expedition, and by others who weren't at all. In some ways showed the flawed Characters. Their weakness and the age old problem of people resorting to self interest.

The Lasseter story is a classic story, like so many other treasure hunting stories of the 1930s. As these stories pass into Legend it is some thing we can all look upon and perhaps learn from.

Thank you for the wonderful link, it is a very interesting read and education.
