Nice assortment of findings. I especially like the glass bottle stoppers & the green button. I've enjoyed the entire post & threads. Sue

Spooky, scraped and cleaned shell and can now add more to the unknown shell. On the bottom it has "FN 1900" written on it. I did not know that FN was around at that time.... I think the 1900 is the date which we have found on many shells. The Enfield shell dimensions are a little different I'm afraid.

Ahh...
THAT sheds some light on it. I believe this is a 7x57 Mauser casing.

It MAY be a Kort nek (Short Neck) "7x57", but it hard to tell.
The dimensions are VERY similar to the US .30-06 cartridge. (on both, the kort neck has, lol.. a "shorter neck)

I won't go into the 7x57 history, as it's pretty openly available.

Kort Nek info:
These were an experimental development of FN, actually, in the 1898-1902 period. FN at that time, was a wholly owned subsidiary of DWM ( after a lengthy Patent battle which FN lost in 1895-96
Supplies sent to the Boers in southern Africa were made by both (or using) FN and DM cases, usually already formed "FyA" Latin American contract cases , in either 7x57 or 7,65x54, suitably sized/trimmed.
"FyA" Spanish "Fusiles y Ametralladores" (Rifles and machine guns).

The experiment died out, since the cases, when used to a great degree in originally 7x57 chamberings, caused erosion of the Neck area such that when ammo was changed back to 7x57 cases, the erosion caused failure to extract as the case necks expanded into the eroded part of the neck.

With the long roundnose projectile of the time, there was no need to go to a shortened case...although a 7x54 design would have had more success later with the Spitzer projectile (in the 1920s); but confusion would have resulted in using two different neck length cases in the same body chambering, to no really useful purpose.

There is also information that although there was experimentation in the "Kortnek" case (the Spelling is Flemish and also Afrikaans), the batch sent to the Boers was made up as an expedient, there being available unfilled 7,65x54 cases on hand (Mosy"FyA" marked, but a FEW with the FN headstamp) and these were simply necked down and loaded.
It was common practice for Ammo factories in the late 1800s and early 1900s to make cases, and then store them till orders for filled ammo arrived. Sometimes cases made one year were loaded even well into the next year.
The "FN" stamped Kort nek cases are quite uncommon.

Both are consistent with your site and Boer War association.

 Great

Hello Sue, thanks for joining us.... Hardluck has done an exceptional job on this topic, one which I have had an interest for a few years now. His knowledge is good, especially for someone who does not live in South Africa  Clapp

Spooky, thanks for you info.... I am now more educated  Wise

Somewhere I do have shells with the "FyA" on them.... Also found at Boer war sites.

Here are a couple more photo's at close range on a couple of items......

1. Silver, think it could be a rim from around a perfume bottle or something similar.
2. Eye from a tent and a little unknown item.
Hi all,

Here are some photos of the big guns that were used in the Boer war....

God bless
Petet

Hello All

Pgill thanks for the interesting photographs of the artillery and other items of the Boer War.

You have a real interesting history of artifacts and treasures to resaerch in your part of the world.

Is there many groups researching and detecting the battle field sites across South Africa?

Hardluck  Smiley

Thanks for the additional pictures, PGill. I especially liked looking, in the backgrounds of the photos, at all the other items in the collection. Sue

Hardluck, it is very difficult to get with other people in this game here. I do know of a chap who is involved in Boer war sites, and as a small group they go to places detecting. I did ask them if I could join them, and I keep getting told they will call me for the next hunt..... It has been about 2 years now and still nothing. All that I have is what I have gone and found myself through hard work and Google Earth.
Natal and Freestate are the main areas of the Boer war, but this is about 4 hours drive to get to these sites, they are also now under the Heritage foundation, so you will get shot on them  Round About. A person needs to find a farm that a battle was on that is not protected, and then ask the farmer permission to hunt. I am still looking into this idea.
Sue, glad you enjoyed the photos..... Just for you I am adding some more of a old Fort that I believe Ghandi was held captive in..... The fort date is 1894 if my mind serves me correctly  Idea

God bless
Peter

I too love ruins, but these ruins have turned into total ruins since the new government took over if you know what I mean  Thumbs Down Their used to be a grand entrance with the date and wooden doors..... the entrance and the doors have been knocked down, the back wall was knocked down and front end loaders bought in lots of soil from a drain trech they dug for a low cost housing project.... They destroyed it totally  No no!.
There was an old catholic church that had stained glass windows. Also graves in the yard..... In the open bush next to the church, they built a squatter camp with huts made from corrugated iron..... Well you guessed it, the roof of the church was made of corrugated iron... that disappeared withing 2 days of the camp arriving, next the windows were removed and the glass broken... the lead got sold as scrap.... Then the graves were opened up..... and within the last Month or so, the walls have now been knocked down.... That was history in perfect condition  Amen Unfortunately, lots of the old sites are going the same way.

God bless
Peter
