Hello All

There is a group of historic aircraft enthusiasts who travel the world looking for aircraft wrecks on sea and land and abandoned historic aircraft. Some they salvage for parts others they recover if restorable for aircraft museums. They research the history of the Aircraft and crew that was in them.

A few years ago I came across a group that was working in New Guinea  and the Solomon Islands.

They had  come in for some criticism from archeologists because of their work on ww2 aircraft that were war graves. Even when they recovered the bodies and notified the relevant authorities of the remains, And helped return the remains of missing airmen back to their families.

Archeologists argue that they are profiteering from the private venture. The group have countered that governments have not bothered to spend the money in retrieving and recording these Aircraft wrecks or returning loved ones remains back to their families. And the money has to come from some where to pay the costs of the discovery and retrieving of such remains.

I recall the group may of been headed by a Frenchman but I cannot recall his name.
They have built up a massive data base of crash sites world wide. Here is a some pictures of their finds.

It would be interesting to see if they have any aircraft listings for west Africa?

Hardluck  Huh?

I'll have to pull out the old copies of Air & Space and Aviation history......I'm pretty sure I remember reading about that group or another one very similar to it.

Howdy all, this sounds like finding a needle in a haystack! One possible scenario, is the plane was in a storm , got struck with lightning lost power/engine fail ... crashed into the jungle/ Sea. This story seems a bit like dejavu to me, im not exactly sure why  Huh? Good teamwork with the info so far, I think alot of luck is needed to get to the bottom of this. Or a lucky break  Cool

I was wondering if a thermal scan could spot potential locations? Perhaps the canopy might still obscure it but it might be interesting. If you could do it at a cool point of the day or year who knows it might show up?

Flying over mountain ranges can be rather tricky all the bush pilots will tell you. Sudden pockets of cold air can drop you like a stone hundreds of feet. If they were flying low for some reason perhaps that could have been the issue, and given no time to tap out a signal. Just a thought.

An interesting tale to say the least. Good job all on finding a lot of intriguing data.  Smiley

Sad Yes but still a dead end at the moment a total dead end and what gets me is that the answer is out there. I just don't see it

sometimes you just have to put a project back on the shelf and let it stew around in the back of your head while you work on something else.   Amazing what avenues open up when you aren't actively searching (but still watching)
