Yeah, and there's a ton of stuff out there you don't really want to mess with.   My younger brother spent a tour there doing EOD.  Much of his time was spent trying to get rid of explosives from old miners camps, ranch sites, etc.

Personally I've got mixed feelings when it comes to opening up White Sands or one of the gunnery/bombing ranges such as the Barry Goldwater Range in southern Arizona.   Personally, I'd love to get the opportunity to pursue some leads I have that are in those areas.   On the other hand, in light of all the yahoos that already go out in the desert unprepared (just review the Lost Dutchman fatalities), I'm not so sure opening those areas to anyone and everyone would be a good idea.

If it was opened up perhaps a special permit and a supplies check could be used to keep the people safe.  Sounds like a great place to search

I think if I was in the area I'd poke around La Cueva and look for similar cave structures. Unless it was a hardrock natural cave it has probably long collapsed, although things tend to be more stable in that southern desert apparently.

A lot of people have looked hard for this thing so my hunch would be (if it exists mind you) that it isn't in the obvious locations.

One thing that stands out to me is no one has found much gold on the mountains, mostly silver and other minerals. Either it was an isolated vein in a rugged spot or it's not really on the Organ mountains proper. Just kinda thinking out loud.

Neat story Seldom!

Im thinking when they covered it up they done a real good job of it. Now with all the time thats passed
it's probably even harder to find. Plants have probably grown over it...

Plants growing over it could actually make it easier to find.   The type, density, and general appearance of plants growing over a void would be different than those growing in the surrounding area, especially in the desert southwest of the United States.
