Hello All

Here is a very common theme in treasure legends, stories about armed hold up of stage coaches. Some times the legends tell of improbable amounts of money involved. Are all the stories just urban myths?

Some may have a grain of truth behind the legends. Like the following story dating back to 1883.

Arizona Territory- the stage running through Black Canyon is robbed for the second time in three days. It appears the location was a well-known hold up spot.
It had been said in newspapers of the time. In the Sacramento Daily union a story published in 1897 told of an event relating to an earlier robbery reported back in 1876. Five men held up the stage coach at or near Arastia hill near Black Canyon. 2 of the men on their death beds confessed to hiding treasure half a gold bar worth with perhaps 32 thousand dollars plus paper money and a hand gun with blood for blood written on it taken from a murdered passenger.

Was there any truth in the story is it one of these old yarns of west that has fallen into legend? A year or so after the event claims circulated that the treasure was buried near Phoenix Arizona. The treasure was enclosed in an Iron coffee pot. A priest from Magdalena Sonora allegedly heard this from a death bed confession from one of bandits spent many years searching for this treasure. It is not known if he or anyone else has found the missing gold and money.
Like with all treasure legends a good search through old journals newspapers and local newspapers will perhaps untangle the fact from the fiction.

Anyway a good one for any buding treasure hunter to research.

Hardluck

Back in the 70's I knew a guy named Erl.

He found  three 60 some lb set of Gold Bars from some Train robbery not far from Tucson.

Do you know any thing about something like that?

I was like 17 and he and wife was in there 70's at the time.

I know the Gov took one Ingot from him as they was marked US GOV and let him keep the other two.

He Bought a New House and his son the same plus matching 4W Drives with the  left overs.

I met him in a Gun Store in Tucson and everyone there knew the Story.

Old Erl and my dad was tight and spent many a days at his house playing with is Birds Dogs and stuff.

Always said He just kept looking over the years for a story he heard about the Robbery and that the Gold was too much for the Bandits to hall off.

Sur he had it nailed down him and his friend was out detecting the area .

HE SAID HE WAS JUST WALKING buy some bushes heading back to the truck after he hit the area he scoped out.

Detector Sang out ( A BFO )   walking buy.

He had worked on a twenty mile stretch of the Old track he thought was in the area of the Stories he heard.

Hello Homfire

I have to check my files. I do have a few stories connected to Tuson, but I have to dig a little.

Its good to hear of your old friends lucky break finding some gold bars.

Are you sure the gold found was from a train robbery?

60 pounds is a lot of gold. I have some information of serveral train robberies from the 1890's to about 1900 around or near Tuson Arizona. However the amount of gold and money does not fit the discription of your friends discovery.

Perhaps he found some treasure entirely related to some other event?

Hello homefire

So perhaps the treasure he found was from a crime in another state. It should be possible to find a record of the event some where.
