I know that we are dealing with at least two.....and if I remember correctly, they are about 30 to 40 years apart.

BA

I am going to be hunting most of the afternoon but will go thru all this and try to come up with a time line to night.

While seldom is out hunting, I'm stuck at work......but I've been doing some research on black gold nuggets (since they figure prominently in the Pegleg stories and may help a) support the stories and b) locate the target area.

Thought y'all like to see these: YouTube video of black gold nuggets

Desert varnish is generally composed of manganese oxide and/or iron oxide suspended in clay....in some areas, the clay can have a high aluminum content which leads to the following----

Laterite and Gold : Laterite gold deposits are formed from pre-existing gold deposits (including some placer deposits) during prolonged weathering of the bedrock. Gold is deposited within iron oxides in the weathered rock or regolith, and may be further enriched by reworking by erosion. Some laterite deposits are formed by wind erosion of the bedrock leaving a residuum of native gold metal at surface. (from

"Laterites are soil types rich in iron and aluminium.......Nearly all laterites are rusty-red because of iron oxides. They develop by intensive and long-lasting weathering of the underlying parent rock." "Ores are concentrated in metalliferous laterites; aluminium is found in bauxites, iron and manganese are found in iron-rich hard crusts, nickel and copper are found in disintegrated rocks, and gold is found in mottled clays."

(the laterite angle is a stretch, but worth keeping in mind)

Sad Sad  talk about messing up....here I've been saying there were two Pegleg Smiths even though everything I've read only refers to Thomas L Smith.   The time lines I see don't seem to support the two Pegleg Smith stories. Turns out my mind has been mixing up Peglegs and lost soldiers (not hard to do when there are several possible lost Pegleg Gold areas and 2 different sets of lost soldier nugget stories ... and they are all in roughly the same area).   Sorry guys  Cry   (but I've got ONE more book to double check)

I don't know....those mountain men covered a lot of territory and the parts of Arizona and California that are central to the Peg Leg stories aren't really all that far apart.
Assuming that there might be to separate Peg Leg Smith's, the Bill Williams that was an associate of Thomas L Smith (Peg Leg 1 for simplicity sake...i.e. the one commemorated in California) is probably the most notable mountain man in Arizona with both a major river (emptying into the Colorado River between Lake Havusu City and Parker)  and a major mountain (near the Grand Canyon) named after him.   There is, however, a possibility that every one has the wrong Peg Leg Smith and the one we are looking for is NOT Thomas L Smith but someone whose first name (or even true name) we don't know.   In other words, as famous as Thomas L Smith was during his lifetime it is entirely possible that another one legged person figured he could pass himself off to strangers as "the" Pegleg Smith.....and probably could unless he ran into one of the other big names.

That makes a lot of sense wouldn't be the first time.

Great info BA and Seldom. I need to pay closer attention to those lead nuggets that show up now and again  Grin

All the veins I know of always have quartz, but it appears sometimes that is not the case. Selling maps always sounds like a con to me though, perhaps someone passed himself off as PL to sell maps? Like you say it wouldn't be the first time...

Here's a thought, Smith is a very common name, and many a Smith probably lost a limb in the war. If you had a wooden leg the nickname was probably a given.

Sorry your hunt wasn't fruitful Seldom.

BA I feel your pain, so many times I think I know who I am looking for only to find someone else, or several someone elses... Those were different times and it was easy to leave your life behind for a new one somewhere else.

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still.
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.

Hi All, I found reading the post interesting. I knew of the Name, but little of the legend!
The theory posted by TD sounded plausible. Other info sounds like he could have just been a con man
selling maps for a few extra bucks.
