Hello all

Interesting enough Mair's descendants are still around to day in New Zealand.

Perhaps a good one goldnboy to track down?

Hello All

Here is a little more about the fate of Captain Mair.

In 1881, five years later, New Zealander Gilbert Mair, aboard the Isabella, a government recruiting ship from Sydney, under Captain Hawkins, was preparing to land at the small island of Espiritu Santos in the New Hebrides.

Captain Mair and his party cautiously approached the beach in the whaleboat and noticed that there were no women or children to be seen. As he and a crew member stepped onto the sandy beach, a group of natives suddenly sprang from the trees and attacked. Mair was struck down along with another crew member, the remaining crew quickly turned the boat around and rowed franticaly out to sea with spears and tomahawks landing in the water close to them, while they fired their rifles into the group of natives on the beach.

Not much but possibly of interest...

A tale of a Robinson Carusoe of his own making. Perhaps he found something there?

Might be an interesting read, I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Sure would be an awsome place to waste a few years....

I spent a little time looking for info on Mair but didn't have much luck. My time has been a bit limited of late. I'm keeping this one in the back of my mind though, there has to be some more to the story. With so many different caches found over time it makes me suspect perhaps Suwarrow was the site of a large loot division by pirates at some early time. Just a hunch but how does one island accumulate so much gold otherwise? Fun to speculate at least Smiley

Cool Hi All, this Island is an interesting one,  I think Idaho Jones theory could be close to the mark. I would like to get there some day also and mellow out for a while. Its not easy access but it can be done. WHo knows what could be waiting out there'   Detecting

Hello all

Hello Idaho Jones Here is picture of the hut that Sterndale and later Neal lived in. Not a bad part of the world  to drop out in. At least there is no grass no mow Grin

A few of these Island women in grass skirts would do nice also Wink

I could think of much worse places to end up in.

Goldnboy If I was younger and seeking adventure and not tied up with other things I know a way to get there on the cheap. Working for free as "crewie" on Yacht. Many of the pacific ocean going yachts use the island as a stop over from Tahiti to New Zealand or vice versa. I did that many years ago across the pacific and it was awesome. There are many places and things I have done ending up without a cent to my name but hell the experience was priceless.

You both have raised some interesting points about possibility of Spanish treasure. there seems to be no evidence of any manila galleon being off course and being shipwrecked there. But it could possibly be a burial site of privateers from South America during the war of Independence?

Anyway I may of found an interesting lead. records of the company Captain Mair was working for when he was killed. I am working on the hypothesis that Mairs letter was sent through the company nad never delivered to his family.

Hardluck

Hi Hardluck thanks for the update.

That's some pretty nice digs! I'm pretty sure I could survive there quite nicely Smiley

So do you believe the company purposefully mishandled the letters in order to search for the treasure, or just lost them by negligence?
