Mair always said that when he was approached by others to help his recover the treasure that they always were too greedy.

There was a lot of newspaper stories about this alleged treasure in the late 1870's Mair was a bit of a legend because of his discovery. The location where he was working when he was killed was very remote and had no postal service. All mail or personnel effects would of been handled through the company.

It is possible that company held onto the letter while sending on his personal effects. His descendants still live in New Zealand.

A you can see by the 1881 newspaper story Mair was hacked to death with tomahawks, not a pleasant way to go.

Hi Hardluck,

That sounded pretty brutal in the article. If the company retained the letter on purpose one would think they would make an expedition to recover the treasure. Perhaps the letter contained no details? Or maybe it was just lost.

Quite an interesting story though.

Hello All

Personally I suspect what Mair found and reburied is long gone as the company had recruitment vessels that sailed all over the Pacific. Anchorage Island was the island he swam to. He would of not had much time to bury the treasure deep or far away from where he came ashore.

What does interest me is another possible stash on another island near Anchorage Island. However the origins of this treasure is not very clear.

if I was passing by I'd take time to have a peek. Grin
