The days of cutthroats, pirates and wild natives are long gone. The main threat there is sharks, sun and lack of water. It is very isolated, if it was not for the yachts traveling across the pacific calling in, the island is uninhabited except for two national parks officer during non hurricane season.
During Typhoon season you have the island all to yourself. It is very remote, to have a bad accident there is most likely fatal.
I know of atolls even more remote. Being on these atolls are like living on the dark side of the moon.
The isolation in these places is unbelievable. first few weeks it seem so novel, then after a month or two you settle in after about 6 months you having conversations with yourself and answer back. After about a year you will be walking around naked with a grisly beard down to you naval having a conversation with a coconut with face drawn on it called Wilson!
And slowly you will begin to realize that you know crap about survival. It is a big learning curve of trial and error. Mostly error. The atolls are full of black ants that are ravenous., the safest place to sleep is on the wet sand on the inner lagoon. Dehydration is a major problem most of day is concerned with obtaining food, water and shelter from the sun.
The trees behind the coconut palms are full of pacific terns that when nesting they are very aggressive, but there eggs have protein.Most of the fish in the lagoon is can give you coral poisoning. So you need to fish of the outer edge of the reef. Dolphin fish cooked hungi style ( Fish wrapped in leaves fire pit buried in sand ) Small Sharks are easy to catch, Trepang ( There is a four letter word describes Sea Slug, it tastes what it looks like )
Some of the leaves of some plants can be eaten to keep scurvy away but stay away from the waxy plants as they give you diarrhea and will dehydrate you .If you are lucky you might find some yams which is a kind of potato full of carbohydrates.
Any fat on your body melts away and your skin turns to a such a deep dark brown that even your own family will not recognize you. Surviving on these islands with no food and water is a big challenge to your body mind and soul.
And hell it really makes you appreciate life when you can walk to the fridge and get a cold one.
