Yes you are correct.
There is another factor to consider during the early 19Th century the British government did not have enough ships to send convicts to Australia because of the Napoleonic wars. So a deal was struck primary with British whalers to take a cargo of convicts to Australia and then engage in the lucrative South Seas whale fishery. Quite a few whalers went out to the Pacific that way. They made money per head going out there and came back with whale oil. it is not beyond the realms of possability that with the shortage of British vessels some American vessels engaged in this trade.
