Given that the Mexican War of Independence lasted from 1810 to 1821, there is no reason to think that Mangas Coloradas (Victorio's immediate predeccessor) did not----especially given the very long history of warfare between the Spanish/Mexicans and the peoples of the Apacheria.    Knowledge gets passed from one leader to the next--especially when it is important for the strategic welfare of the people being led.
