The whole legend smells of writer fraud from the beginning. The first few story's about it never put a weight or value on it. The groups records claim to show them buying 1200 pounds of gold from a mine in central America and I can't prove that happen its just part of the legend. Then it started showing up in print as 12 tons of gold sometime in the 60's or 70's it ballooned into 17 tons of gold.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hello All

The 17 Tons story is intriging because we do have some interestings facts. But like all treasure legends we need to cut off the fat to get to meat of the story.  Cheesy

There is much to unravel of the story before we can better understanding of it. I have heard a few versions of this story, it is hard to know what is fact and what is fiction. However think there is enough documents out there somewhere that might make things a little clearer. Huh?

Hello All

It is interesting to note most of people involved in this story seemed to have lived at one time in California.

Interesting  Yes  Surprising No    I have researched several treasures from that time period  involving Texas/ Mexico and it was common for people to move back and forth from the states to Mexico.

Hello Seldom

It is a good point you make.

That is point that has always niggled me. If the border was so porous back then. Why would anyone abandon 17 tons of gold if they could of removed the gold back to mexico?

We have discussed that a little and  its a good possibility that what ever gold was brought into the US was taken back out in fact my research shows it would have been easier to smuggle it out then in during the late 30's. It had to be done before 1941 thats when the borders tightened up because of WWII but even then like now there is not a lot of concern about whats going out.

I finally got a phone call back from Will Wilson's daughter who would give me very little info but did confirm that Wilson was not his real name and ask me not to  tell his real name at this time. The family has 4 file boxes full of info on this treasure and are negotiating with several writers to turn it into a book.
She did confirm that the Trabuco group brought less then 2000 pounds of gold into the US and all but a few 100 pounds were accounted for.
She was a very nice and sweet lady but pretty much told me wait for the book so guess thats what we will do.
This is like the 5th project that I have hit a wall on the last 2 weeks so guess we need some new legends. Will see what I can find of interest.

Seldom, I wouldn't say you've run into a wall on this one, you've run into someone trying to sell a book. Even then, their numbers don't jive with the information contained in the Secret Service investigations. I've got a great deal of research on this one, but even if it were just "a few hundred pounds" left; at $1,700.00+/ounce - I could live with that.
