I recently found some newer dog tags. When googled, the gov't warned me that they were U.S. Gov't property. They also said NOT to attempt to contact the family and/or the issuee. What are the past experiences of you MD'ers?

Welcome to the new world order (not exactly what folks expected).   What you were told is correct and is a direct result of ISIS and Al Qaeda threats directed at servicemen and women AND their families.  (btw, technically the dog tags have always been U.S. Government property, but there has never been a problem contacting families of pre-Gulf War era personnel)

PM me.   I will do the best I can to contact the Family.  I need Location found, and date please.    I don't know any Family of the Military or Government entity that  would Stop you from returning them to the Family.     Even  after 80 years and third Generation  Some one would love to have those tags.

Homie, returning old tags isn't hard.  We do it all the time in my local club (especially WWII era tags)
What Raverconvict is talking about is trying to return/contact families of current conflict personnel.   Google "ISIS threats against military families" and you'll see why the person spoken to said NOT to attempt to contact the family or the person the tag was issued to.   With current tags, it's probably best to try to return them to the military so they can forward them.

Other than that, I fully agree with your statement.

Hi Homie. A question for ya. IF you want to get replacement DT's where can a person get them? I lost mine several years ago and sure would like to have a pair to pass along to my children someday. I served in the early 60's. Thanks in advance.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

If your Retired military go to the base and ask CBPO people for Replacements.  What can they say?  No?   I still have my set put away for the same reasons.

These are the same folks that make them for the military  I think.  .  Have some Cut.
