Just wondering before I try and build one if anyone here ever actually used a Magnetometer to find anything?

digger 1 . A magnetometer is not an instrument to locate coins or other small objects . It is used to show variations in the Earth Magnetic field . These deviations MAY show an object that is disturbing the normal magnetic field . It will show shipwrecks when there is enough metal in the wreck such as cannon or anchors . It is highly directional and that is why we usually use two sensors . If you have a magnetometer with one sensor you have to follow a set coarse and stick to that  . So it is all up to what you want to detect . By the way , if you use one sensor you may measure the magnetic field at one spot . Repeated measurements may show you variations in the magnetic field but only when there is metal present the reading will change substancially .   Cornelius

Cornelius;
The cannon and local trash dump is what I am looking for. The cannon is the most important item to me as it was documented to have been hidden in a ravine along with gold coins which was part of a military payroll.

Thank you for the input as I am just starting to research this type of detecting. I have tried a two box system and feel it is not the way to go as you must walk over the target.

I would like to build an audible type but did not know about the two sensors so thank you. I will continue to research this design.

Any info you are aware of that I could read would be appreciated, Thank you

Hello Digger,

I have several magnetometeres which I use. It will however only pick up your canon is it is made of iron. Bronce or non-ferous material can NOT be detected by a magnetometer.

Are you look at a sea or land based dump site? I think we have some simple do it yourself magnetometer plans in our download area.

Best wishes,

Christian

Hi,
Possibly an "Earth resistivity logger" might be better for your purposes.
With this you can build up a picture (on p.c.) of local ground anomolies.
I think there is a link on here to build one.
I know I have the schems. somewhere if you can't find it.
It was a build feature in one of the u.k. electronics mags a few years back....

Yes Paul it was in the EPE magazine . I referred  to your post . Anybody interested should use the address you put in your post and look at the website of Geotech1 .  Cornelius

I have not build the Earth Resistivity Logger yet mentioned by Paul but planned on building it one day. The plans can still be backordered from here:

Hi Christian,
The cannon is iron and the dump is on land and I would hope there is enough steel scraps in the dump to be detected.

Are the ones you use portable and have audio signal?

I would like something with an audio signal if possible with software as a secondary way to look over the data.

Thank you to all for your input as I feel like I am getting closer to a plan and maybe a good schematic on how to build what I need.

Hello Digger,

Audio Signal is not present on most magnetometer as you have to keep ferrous material away from them as far as possible and the materials used in headphones / speakers would interfer with your magnetomter.

About how deep to you expect the canon etc. to be?

regards,

Christian

 Hello Christian,
I can only guess as it was hidden in a ravine and there is no mention of depth. My best guess would be 12 to 20 feet but could be more or could be less as that area has some deep ravines from water run off even today there are places that are 20 feet deep and the stuff may have settled over time.
Thanks
Digger1
