Go Up Go Down

Hi I have just completed the build of the PIC MAGNETOMETER LOGGER and I have hit a problem. The article says on initial switch on set the following. RECORD switch up (off), SCREEN MODE 2 down (on), TEST switch down (on).

On switch on I get EPE MAGNETOMETER on line 1 and 2 EEPROM CHIPS on line 2. The screen then changes to 'NO GPS CONNECTED' followed by a number. If I disconnect the wire from PIN 35 (RB2) on the PIC I then get the correct screen reading as in the article. PIN 35 connection goes to SCREEN MODE 2 switch and pulls this pin to 0V when switched on.

Does anyone have any ideas where the problem lies. I realise this is now a very old article.

Ken

Hi thank you for responding. The article was in the EPE magazine in July 2004. I have a PDF of it I could send you.

Did you do any checking for Corrections before the Build ?   Like this one ?

EPE PIC Magnetometer (Part 1) - with data logging for archaeology and metal detecting. Based on the high sensitivity FGM-3 fluxgate sensor, this project is designed to measure the direction and/ or intensity of the earth's magnetic fields, in order to help locate any disturbances underneath. Helps pinpoint hidden artifacts and other archaeological features. PC serial interface and optional GPS interface. Data logging feature. Valuable free Windows software. More screenshots available here (zip file 460k). Free source code available from our Downloads page.

In the Sept. 04 issue (P.623) we advised that the correct number for Speake & Co., the suppliers of the flux sensors, should be 01600 780150 and not as printed. In the Nov. 2004 issue we said that on Page 474 Fig 6, the FGM6 legends for Sig Out and GND have been transposed. GND is pin 2 and SIG OUT ispin 3. The wiring connections to th ePCB should be transposed.

Maybe someone else has made the Build and will chime in.

HH  Please fill us in on what you find.

Not really up on this type of thing I'm hoping someone with more back ground jumps in.

Have a look in Geotech.  There was a pile of activity on it there.
