Fluxgate Magnetometer by Carl Moreland

This project is built around fluxgate sensors and a gradiometer chip made by Speake & Co. in the UK. It is extremely easy to build and total parts cost is around $150, less if you have a good supply of surplus hardware. The article presented here was published in the May, 2000 issue of Poptronics magazine, the online version may incorporate subsequent revisions. The version currently posted is Revision 1.2.

The fluxgate sensors and chip used in this project are produced by Speake & Co. in the UK. If you live in North or South America, the distributor is Fat Quarters Software in California. Both addresses follow. Fat Quarters is also the sole distributor of PC boards and parts kits.

I built one of those last year. It was real easy to build and it is extremely sensitive. I can pick up my barbeque grill from 20' away!

Many thanks for offering us a cheaper alternative magnetometer. I would like to build this, but found meanwhile also the EPE pic magnetometer. I wonder which one to make. This one seem more practical because it does not require a computer, but with limited (only a LED??) signalling it could be of any help in the field? I have to identify a large iron object underground in mountains.
Could anyone answer how to alter this design to me more versatile? For ex. to be able to use it without computer but also later at home to connect a computer and process the result?
Many thanks.

You could hook it up to a data logger, or just write down the readings from a grid pattern and then when at your computer enter the data into your program.
