hi everyone ;;;   i want to build the mag with speak&co sensors. is this mag sensitive enouh for archeology? or would a ppm project be better? just trying to find out advantages or limitations of each so i build the right one. any advise is appreciated. also want to build resistivity logger by john beck. but havent found the plans yet.   thank u all;;;;;     jb

Hi JB,

well a PPM sure is a better choice while the Fluxgate mag is easier to build and might also suit your needs.

What's your budget to spend?

Regards,

Christian

thanks cristian;;    of coarse id like to keep it as cheap as possible. but also want to build a good machine. would like to be able to log readings into pc. and learn to do all that entails.  would a ppm be much heavier or harder to build.   looked like the fluxgate might be much easier. since i can buy sensors already made. also  what are pros & cons of making it a gradiometer?would that be better sensitivity?  thanks again;;;   jb

Hello, first time i am posting.
What I have learned is that the PPM has a slow respons and you would have to move slow to register anomalies with a narrow signature. The respons of the fluxgate is much faster, so even small fluctuations will be registered even if you move at relatively fast pace. Cesium magnetometers do the same but are complicated $$
The largest problem with the fluxgate is to align the two sensors even though the speake chip has a autocalibration feature.
Is there anyone who can explain to me how the commercial companise like Vallon and Foerster went from sensitivity of 10 nT to 0.3 nT with a fluxgate, is it done with software?

Hello Olsteffe! Welcome to our forum and thank you for this interesting posting. Well, I have been using both Fluxgate and Proton Sensors and both had good speed. E.g. most boat towed magnetometers are still proton type ones and a boat runs at quite fast speed compared to a human Smiley

Vallon and Foerster did not use any sort of software on their earlier models. Try to find a OGF. It is the GDR verson of the older Foerster magnetometers and can be bought for under USD 500.00 2nd hand.

Best wishes,

Christian

Sounds like fun!
Hey, guy, it was your posts that got me on this forum... and it is the craziest one I have ever seen, but then, all us treasure hunters are a bit crazy, anyway (speaking for myself, of course.)

I am quite interested in the magnetometer/deep locator topics and have designed a PPM type. not built yet.

I will watch this forum closely to see how you make out.

christian,
since you mentioned to me that OKM rover deluxe is a magnetometer, i want to know how this thing work when searching for non ferrous items at a depth of 18meters ( as mentioned in okm manual).what type of sensor does this equipment used and what are the limitations.

The OKM is a Fluxgate Gradiometer. Buried objects in means of earth removal will alter the original earth magnetic field and the gradiomater may measure those. But as I said before:

1. Nothing will be buried at 18 m depth
2. If there is anything at 18 m depth, changes of the OKM detecting it are near 0.

Regards,

Christian
