Someone who is really understands the earth's magnetic flux lines can actually use a compass as a magnetometer. It's been done before. Read the book, The Treasure Hunter by Robin Moore and Howard Jennings for a description of using a compass in Central America to locate some large chests.

Hi Redflex,

What is the dimension of that ammo box? Is it a regular box used to contain rifle rounds or is it a bigger one?
If it is a standard ammo box of around 30cm long and 25cm wide, you would have some difficulty to detect it using a magnetometer 3meters deep. We have made some benchmark tests with that type of ammo boxes and published on our web site. Look at it here:
