Hi,

It depends what it is contained in and in which soils it has been buried.
A mag can ONLY detect magnetic material or material in which a proportion of it is magnetic. This includes iron, steel, nickel and chrome.
However, the normal ground also usually contains a certain amount of magnetic particles like magnetite. When the ground has been disturbed by artificial means, it is also possible to detect the disturbance but this needs a good quality instrument and specific procedures to eliminate the natural earth magnetic field variations.

Hi Willy...the project area based on the logging report was more clay, then fine sand, mixed sand and gravel, coral rocks and then black sand. It is highly mineralized. The Gemini 3 was not at help at all. So my question regarding Mags came in. Our target is gold.

Resistance measurement may show you the Fault holding the Quarts.

The mag will show the variations of magnetic components of the ground area to be surveyed, more specially what disturbs the normal metal detectors (black sand for example). The resistivity meters will show the variations of conductivity, including the variations of humidity of the underground.
The two instruments are actually complementary.
My best advice for such a specific case is to hire an instrument from a geophysical company, use it once and give it back. This does not call for a specific development nor even buying a new instrument just for that.

If your interested in learning more on Resistive and Induced Polarity systems, here is a Most basic unit and fairly good description on how it works.

The EPE of April and May 2003 give a more modern Earth Resistivity measurement system based on a PIC.
I have built it a few years ago and it worked very well apart from a few bugs.
