I trust that you are aware of the use of a magnetometer. Having said that, have you done a Google search?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hello Bobby, a magnetometer is a powerfull detecting tool whoch will only react to ferrous (iron) materials. These can however be located quite deep using one. It is rather simple to operate.

Best wishes,

Christian

Feb 1968 Scientific American had an article with schematic & instructions for a Proton Precession Magnetometer. It doesnt cost much to build. I have built 2 in the past & currently building a more modern , upgraded model.

Any clues as to where to find old Scientific American articles?

Thanks for the reply, I had already found that ebay site,
but here in Sydney the postage is more than $50 on top
of the asking price.
I will keep looking or look in some local libraries.
Thanks, Neville
The old plans for a Proton Magnetometer are attractive
because they will not assume that  a micro or PC can be used.
By the time you add the computing the item loses portability
and I am looking to make a compact unit.
