Welcome. I have also been searching for magnetometer building info. At one time I had the plans for a simple device, but have not been able to find them. Still looking though.

Hello Greg!

Welcome to our Forum! If you take a look at our Magnetometer Board you will find several do it yourself projects there.

Please let us know if you build any of those and about your progress.

Best wishes,

Christian

I am still working on trying to start this Magnetometer Project Page , so I have not forgot !! I am going to make a presentation that will include  "Fluxgate Magnetometer" Theory including a new Fluxgate Circuit . The other will be a type of magnetic differential circuit. It will take me several more days , and I have seen the one's that are already posted here . But I am really looking for an inexpensive PIC-CHIP type magnetometer that is easy to program. I found a bunch of NASA literature , but I am specifically studying / searching for ground anomalies and the circuits that can detect them at a medium to long range distance........ Gold or no Gold , what are the differences to look for , related to varying ground conditions ? ............But something that does not cost thousands of dollars............Other members here on Thunting.com are very welcome to comment here !!!.....I have a very good feeling , we can find some Great "NEW"  Magnetometer Circuit information to post here on Thunting.com !!...... Wise Wise Wise Wise.............. Waveing Waveing.....Regards...................Eugene52

Hi Eugene52,

It is one of the few PPM kit systems which is proven to be really working (no scam!!).
Being a PPM, it is also much more sensitive than any fluxgate system based on the Fat Quarters (i.e. Speake & Co) sensors.

I built the Fatquarters mag and it works great! I can detect my barbeque grill from 20' away. Also, at $180 it is a lot cheaper than the PPM Mark II ($1,300).

Hi Eugene, Christian, Salvor and others,
Christian - back on another post I think you stated that you were working on a couple of Willy's kits- if I am correct, have you completed it and have any results? Willy's design is PPM and is more sensitive than the fluxgate- am I correct?Salvor, the Fat Quarters design is fluxgate, am I correct? I am asking these questions to make certian I have everything correct in my researching-there is so much out there it can get confusing fast. Now is there a portable unit that can also be used as a base unit that you can simply change the sensor and go from land to marine without having two complete units? And be affordable.
Thanks ahead for keeping me straight
FOS
