I am not really sure what people search with this meter.

I know it helps find iron types but why, what...treasures  buried cars($300@local recycle)??

As I type buried cannon balls or cannons ...or

I like the science of it and will probably build one

Someone tell me please.   Smiley

Based on Natural magnetic fields and Anomalies, that's pretty much what they do.

Only Iron, Steel and other magnetic elements will produce a Anomaly.

With out a Logger of some type, there not going to tell you much unless your on something big.

Hi,

Very useful to find iron or steel objects but also most meteorites even the rocky ones.
Unlike the best metal detector which merely sniffs to a depth of 30cm, a good magnetometer detects a mass of 1Kg at a distance of 2 meters (e.g. an old rifle or pistol) or a mass of one ton at 20 meters (indeed a car, but also an old cannon or an anchor).

However, this technology is more complex to implement than it seems at first sight.

Good luck if you start making one!!!

Willy

You could also bet that this was a metallic meteorite and make a general survey of the whole area using a magnetometer. It will easily detect any sizable object/remain made of iron/nickel/... alloy much deeper that any metal detector on earth.
If nothing is found, too bad, it was probably a rocky meteorite.

Thanks for both answers Willy

Also, many rocky meteorites contain an amount of magnetite which is also detectable by a mag.

Keep us posted on this meter. I am open to anything that can help me here in the desert. I want to start hunting meteorites soon, also wonder how things like black sand, would effect it. I need to know where the creeks used to be.

Black sands ARE magnetite!!

If you are interested with an operational PPM, go there:
