willy;

The relay can handle high voltage spikes, from the coil, but may fry a HEXFET, unless a high voltage type... I would rather use a PNP high voltage Darlington circuit, and some suppression.

I can even make the Darlington circuit, if not available in one case, thus tailoring gain, voltage, current, etc.

In our PPM systems, we are routinely using HEXFET's for circuit switching of the polarization current without any problem.
We are using P-channel HEXFET IRFR5305 (Vdss=-55V,Rds=0.065 ohm, Id=-31A) combined with the N-channel HEXFET IRLR3705 (Vdss=55V, Rds=0.008 ohm, Id=32A).
We usually set the polarization current to 2A without any HEXFET becoming hot due to their very low Rds.

willy;

55 volts sounds low but if it works, it works. I just got some high current Darlington amps, hFE 1000, that are rated 100 v and may have some at 300 v. I would still use a small heat sink.

The frequency cut-off is immaterial, of course, so I could even  use an old junk-box DS501 (hFE 90/at 4 A- it is rated at 100 w diss, so 3.9 or 4 A at 12 v is about 50%, with 20 kHz cut-off, heh.) And I have lots of heat sinks in my junk-box. I am a firm believer of /if its in the junk-box, dont buy it/!

I really need to stop doing so much email (first rate procrastiation) and start doing some building.
