Go Up Go Down

Hello All,
Last year a boat of a friend of mine got lost, and it's obvious that it sunk.Probably it lays up side down in 6-10 mtr (20-30 feet) deep water and covered by a layer of mud.
The area surface to look for it might be around 5 square kilometers,And because it's at a river outlet, the water is partly or completly salt.
The boat's dimentions are: 2,5 mtr wide by 6 mtr long, and made completly out of fiberglass.
It is/was powered by a V8 Chevrolet engine,so at least 300 kg of cast iron.
I'm planning to spend my next holiday searching for it,but I don't know where to start.
Can somebody advise me how to look for it,and what kind of equipment I need...
Cheers, Ferry.

Helllo Ferry,

you are allready in the right board! You are allready in the right board as you will best need a magnetometer for your task! You can eitehr buy or lend one. Leding is cheaper than buying but if you get a good deal on one, you might just sell it again after you are done and even make some profit on it.

Right now there is a JW Fisher Proton 2 (old version) Mag for sale on eBay as low as USD 800 if I remember correctly. That's very cheap.

or you could also try using a side scan sonar like the Buron from

The cheapest option you have would be to pull a friend equipped with a diving mask and warm neopren suit behind your boat. Hpwever if you can afford try to get a magnetometer, keep track of the spots / readings and check them with a diver afterwards. It should be easy to locate.

Then get some lift bags (can be rented) and there you go!

Good luck and please keep us posted.

Best wishes,

Christian

PS: Or, you probably could just hire someone doing the search and recovery for you if you don't have the time or run out of it.

6 months or more in salt water  Exhausted...the motors gone beyond repair, all electronics shot, all wiring will need replacing. The hull might be okay...maybe, the stringers will be soaked through and possibly begining to rot which would make the hull unsafe to use.

Finding it will be a task...raising it also a task, possibly dangerous & a little pricey (lift bag purchase or rental, boat time and fuel for searching, lifting/hauling out of water once towed back to land, boat storage fees, TONS of time and money restoring it, etc., etc.  No no!

You'd be far better off buying a similar boat used and would get away cheaper...of this I am certain.  Teach

Spend your diving time better...there's much more worth while things to dive for...trust me  Wink
