Hello to one and all..I'm asking if any members have an idea or know, the growth rate of Holly trees here in S.C. . I have a VERY large one in the woods on my property. It is covered with symbols and letters. They are opened 1-2 " from growth over the years.  The land was farmed (50-75 years ago) at one time, so most of the trees are of the same age. The avg. Holly is about 4-6" dia. This tree was left alone, maybe because of the strange makings??..it is several ft. in dia. and over 75 ft. tall. I am close to the Catawba indian reservation, but their onsite historical expert never heard of such a thing, and as I said, there are some english style letters carved on the tree..Will post photo's if interested..Thanks

Thanks for your interest, there are photo's now posted and will put better ones on as well in the next couple of days..Would like to see some of the FL. ones
As noted in my original post, this is a VERY old Holly tree. In posting these new "chalked" photo's you will see a piece of chalk placed in a crving to give an idea of the spead and depth of some of the carvings.. The word or letters " ODISFOST" with the odd sign below are a real mystery to me.. the sign and variations of it apear in other places.. I would like to hear any comments on the arrow that intercets with the S in the ODISFOST lettering..Thanks for any interest and comments.

Those marks? Just years of kids with pocket knives leaving their marks on a tree. Nothing more. Don't go nuts over them. Nobody ever hid a treasure and left markings in public. Nobody. Ever. Seriously.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi, I thought it was interesting that there are rocks around the carved tree and no rocks showing in the rest of the pictures. Sue

Sue...Yes, what I found interesting was the tree was preserved over the years..this land is now wooded, but years ago was farmed . As one comment said in the public eye. No its not and never was. For some reason it was spared when the land was cleared long ago ..I find that odd, as farmers were not to sentimental I'm sure about trees. The only reason I can come up with is that a lot of the carvings were on it at the time. If anyone is familier with the Carolinas, they know Hollys take a long time to grow and one this size is very rare. The Abbyville connection really has my interest. Like I say it could be nothing, but of all places in the state it holds a long held secret as you probably know..thanks again for your incite and pointing out a direction to follow up on..Harry
