Go Up Go Down

Many years ago I read an article about a businessman collecting and studying old/antique maps for the sole purpose of locating mines that were marked on the maps and then searching for them to see if they could be re-opened again as the increasing price of gold and other minerals might make it worthwhile. Does anyone know about this?

Many thanks...

Can't say about the UK but your Ordnance Survey maps might have mines on them like our US Coast and Geodetic Survey maps do. They're indicated here by crossed pick and shovel on the contour map. Unfortunately, they don't tell you if they are abandoned or working mines. Either way, they might still be owned or on private property.

With the Current Climate of Tree Hugger things, A Lot of that info has been Dropped from the TOPO and Forest Maps.    Just not there any more.

The Maps before say 1990 have some crazy good info on them.

Many times I have found mines and ghost towns by studying the older USGS maps here in the U.S., starting in the 1970's.  But like Homefire says, the environmental movement and infiltration of the Forest Service has removed a lot of that information.  Not just on the maps, but on the ground, also (road closures, etc.)!   Angry

They are required to be there to keep people from falling down open shafts. Where did you ever get the idea they were removed?

I've used older maps and then newer of the same area by the same people.

Older maps had more info.

Mines, Wells Structures that did not show on the new maps.

On the USCGS maps, they are there even on the downloadable maps. You must be referring to road atlases or the DeLorme maps.

USGS Topo Maps.     They Omitted some info.   I can understand the Structures that may be reduced to Rubble but it would be cool if they shown the locations.

Wells and Mines are missing on some.
