I was shown photos of a stone carving of a turtle at a friend's house, but was not allowed to make copies. The attached drawings are from memory.
The flower, hand, 6 boxes and sword are all carved into the turtle's chest and sides. I could not tell from the closeup photos which side of the turtle those objects were carved in. I estimated the turtle's dimensions by comparing it to the person standing beside it in the photo.
The turtle has no legs and tail showing. It did not seem to have been vandalized, so the lack of legs and tail may have been intentional. The neck of the turtle is stretched outward and upward with the mouth slightly open.
The following information is from the owner of the photos who was also physically at the turtle's location:
Location of turtle: in front of a cave that is high up in a mountain in dense jungle. The cave was allegedly used by Japanese soldiers during WW2. The turtle's head points due east. Japanese and American tourists have been around the area, asking about the location of such a turtle.
The owner of the photo found remains of helmets and bayonets at the cave area.
My own thoughts:
Why would Japanese soldiers carve a Chinese-like sword? Why not carve a samurai sword? Does this pertain to the "M*****" code used in certain parts of the Philippines? Or did the soldiers simply prefer the Chinese method of cooking turtles as opposed to turtle sushi?
In any case, I have earned enough of their trust for them to offer to take me up to the cave for a bit of detection. Will I be wasting my time? Your thoughts on the matter will be appreciated.
