ksightler;

I have a question about security: what is going to happen when I, a Canadian, try to access the Library of Congress, for these maps?

Are our friends, the Iranians allow to access?

How about Taliban and Al Qaieda?

I can tell you right now, I want neither CESIS nor Homeland Security, hounding me.

I doubt if I will be using this resource, very soon. Anyone, in other countries, should think twice, before accessing the Library of congress, for maps, as well.

If there is no security, then it is a security leak/loophole.

Your funny.... No these are public record archives... your hard earned tax money at work. There is no classified info here.. just historical treasures and our right to access them =) I am in the navy ...20 years..... trust me... our secrets are pretty safe... =)

ksightler;

Not funny and not my tax dollars, wrong on 2 counts, already!

Yes, I am aware that they are public libraries, that is not to say all foreigners have access, because there is technological info, on these sites that you are not allowed to export.... check it out.

Also, maps are a touchy subject: I have tried to get satellite produced maps, before, from US companies, that could not or would not produce same, even though they were maps of Canadian territory,  and I am a Canadian even though my father had dual US/Canadian citizenship, something they dont allow, now.

Google Earth views have been altered for some vital areas, not much but some.

There may be security of which you are not aware. I hope so.

Never thought of it that way....... I was trying to save some of our member some cash as they sell a lot of the maps on e-bay... especially the 1700s spanish maps of the florida coast and the caribbean.... I thought you were a US citizen.... eh... Sorry for my dry humor... just being friendly.... and helping out our fellow members....

ksightler;

Problem with maps, they cant tell me where the gold is!   Funny

I can use Google Earth. I have a little 2 gig MP3 player that also holds data or images. So I can take a Google Earth image, increase the contrast and place my image (directions) on the player. It has a small LCD screen, about 3 X 5  cm.

And I have 3 GPS units..... can I get lost? Not as long as I can see sun or stars.

Yes, yes. The OOOOOOOLD maps, but I can put one of those on it too.... in quarters, for greater detail.

By taking my Google images, that have my position markers, I can see where I WANT to go, too.

Try it.

Hello there... I use stardust.... It is well worth getting a viewer as these maps are awesome... almost no loss in quaility... you can probably get a near perfect full sized copy if you print one of these at kinkos....

Goldguru;

I am not too interested i old treasure maps.... the lost treasures, which I know  about, never had maps.... unless I might put down the stories, in map form, then it becomes literature.

I am more interested in tools that will give me instant earth views or make maps from same.

I am mildly interested in Geo-caching but I think its too much like work, I'm too old to work, don't you know.  Thumbs Down

Do you live in Richmond?? I lived in N.Van District, Burnaby, Shaughnessy, New West, Richmond and Annie Dale. Too many people, there, now. I had one of the beach houses on Maplewood mud flats, in 1968. About 2505 Dollarton Hwy.   Waveing

I'm in Dawson Creek.
