The historical points are place names no longer being put on maps. From the US Name Server.

Many of these sites would be good to poke around at with your metal detector.

You can load this data into your GPS for locating in the field.

If your browser will not start Goggle Earth then just right click to 'save file as' and than load locally.
The GPS file should import to most any GPS software for unit download. The data has been sorted Lat-Long.

Glad you can use it dr. The file is all historical sites for PA. Sort of experimental as I don't know what categories and what format is the most usable for users. If anybody else would like their State or County done just request it.

Another thing I noticed will browsing through the files is that the old FORDING sites are not on any new maps. Most all old maps of the 1800's have the places where you could ford a river. Those fording sites would probably be a good spot to metal detect. There is a spot local to me that had a spot uphill from a ford that was used as a camping area for travellers. It was about half way between two towns. I spent four days hitting it hard with my detector. Grin

The whole area is now under houses. Sometimes it is enough just to suggest sites to work. These fords were usually rocky areas where shallow rapids are. If you find a spot like that with the banks wore down on each side, it was probably a ford. beep beep beep Cool
