There are about 500 years old located in the so. cal. The second photo appears to be a Spanish style cross? Any thoughts.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

It's not likely that anything written in red will survive that long unless it is in a cave, away from sunlight.

i found some red pictographs the other day that weren't in a cave, but some of them were on a cliff with a little bit of an over hang.  so the can survive in sunlight. it was on the South aspect of the cliff face so it was in almost constant sunlight.  but i have seen a lot that have faded from sunlight.  this last weekend i found some great ones, where the color really showed despite their age, and sunlight exposure I'll post them as sson as i get home to my own computer.

Native Americans didn't stop making petroglyphs just because missions and missionaries entered the area--it would be surprising if new symbols did not enter their petroglypic lexicon, especially given the emphasis on visual symbols in the missions.   But it is also well documented that later residents (especially bored herders) also added their "artwork"---which might or might not be "mere" graffiti and might or might not be similar to that of the native Americans in the area.  (and the similarities don't stop at just petroglyphs....weaving styles, silversmithing, and tinworking styles, etc often show cross cultural influences between the indigenous people and other populations in the area, especially where the other populations are of mixed ethnic origin).

Very interesting...thank you BA, I'm heading home now, and will post that one I was talking about with the little "conquistador dude"  that's what it looked like to me at least, there were a whole lot of petroglyphs and pictographs at this particular location.  I had never been there and my folks showed me the area, it was very interesting.
here's that one that appeared to be holding a shield even if it's not referring to the Spaniards it's a cool one none the less
